Medicaid – The centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services
Medicare and Medicaid Services Centers for CMS are a federal agency at the US Department of Health and Human Services, which co-operates with state governments on Medicaid, Medicare, Healthcare Portability Standards and the State Children's Health Insurance Program. They include other functions, such as the quality of long-term care, clinical laboratory quality standards and the administrative aspects of HIPPA 1996.
In 1965, the Social Security Act was signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson. both Medicaid and Medicare. The Social Security Agency is responsible for administering Medicaid. Then, in 1977, the Heath Care Financing Authority (HCFA) became Medicaid and Medicare's responsibility. In 1980, the Department of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW) was divided into two separate agencies: the Ministry of Education and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The HCFA was in the Department of Health and Human Services. In July 2001, HCFA was renamed to Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) centers. This change was made to provide the agency with a new direction and a new spirit to reflect the CMS mission of providing millions of Medicaid and Medicare beneficiaries across the United States.
